Reinventing Yourself Through Self-Hypnosis
Transcript from Body Mind and Spirit Expo appearances
February 2005 Santa Monica, California and April 2005 Pasadena, California.
We all live under the same sky, but we do not all have the same horizon.
Hello everyone, It's good to see you all here today.
My name is Daniel Wheeler.  I am a certified  hypnotherapist and a member of the American Board of Hypnotherapy. I am a member of the International Hypnosis Federation and the Alberta Hypnosis Society. I am also an International recording artist and composer. It is an honor to be speaking to all of you today.
When the good folks at Horizon Productions were looking for a speaker, they called the speaker they knew who was the most experienced in "Reinvention".
They explained about this engagement at the Body, Mind, Spirit Expo and asked him to lecture.   He said, "Sorry, but I can't."
Then they decided, "If we can't get the most experienced expert in reinvention, then we will get the person who was the best speaker". But when they called, that person said, "I'm sorry, but I can't"
So since the good people at Horizon Productions could not get the most expert or the best presenter, they thought " We'll get the best looking.....". But wait !   When they called, that person said he "Could not give the lecture"
A few weeks ago, I got a call from Horizon Productions asking if I could speak on Reinventing Yourself at the Body, Mind, Spirit expo. I thought  "I can't say no to these nice people four times in a row "!.   So here I am!
How many of you know what Reinvention is? How many of you feel you have Re-invented yourself, or know someone who has.
How many of you don't have a clue what I'm talking about?    Pause for response
Let me tell you what Reinvention is, and what it is not.
Reinvention is:
A chance for renewal, the opportunity to change.
Technically, reinventing is a significant, noteworthy movement from point A to point B, for whatever point A and point B represent for you.
Reinventing represents a departure from what came before, or an embellishment of something that was in place. Often even the most positive change represents upheaval.
Upheaval: not in the negative sense, but in the positive action of stirring up the dust of old habits and seeing what's left, when the dust clears.
Reinvention: although the word has become one of these "New Words", has been around for a long time. People have changed. Nations have changed. Businesses have changed to meet the demand of the consumers.
Even Madonna has reinvented herself!  How many times has Madonna re-invented her persona? How about Cher? Colonel Sanders? Colin Powell is a good example of someone who has reinvented himself.
"From keeper of our borders", to "keeper of our children", to "Statesman": Secretary of state under the present administration.
Our friend Bill Clinton is trying to reinvent himself, but I'm not sure he will be successful !!So you see, reinvention can take on a lot of different forms.
Reinvention is not: Getting a Facelift, or a Tummy tuck, though it may help.  You have to change what's inside too. Maybe first.
Reinvention is not running for office, if you did not feel new, renewal, or inspired, it would not represent a reinvention.
Enrolling in school, if your boss says that you should take a course or you couldn't get the kind of job you were seeking with the education you currently have. So you run down to the local community college or four year university and enroll. Does that represent a Reinvention? People would probably say no.
Reinvention can be many things to many people, but what does it mean to you?   pause for answers
I would like to talk today about "Getting Your Mind Right'
Whenever I ask clients why they want or need to reinvent themselves, the most common answers are:
A better life. Life to be more interesting. To be happier. To make more money. To be more respected. A stronger relationship. A stronger body. To be more spiritual. To know God.
It stands to reason that these changes people are looking for are of a personal nature, and the only way to start the change process is on a personal level.
First, "Get Your Mind Right".
In the Profession of Hypnotherapy, we have defined reinvention as:  Creating or Recreating one's self.
We accomplish this by guided our clients through a series of hypnotic inductions and scripts, allowing the person's subconscious mind to make the changes.
It is a more complex procedure than that, but in a nutshell that is what we wish our ultimate outcome to be.
Creating and making changes based on what your mind is ready to accept, and working with the conscious and subconscious to bring about positive change. As a result we are Recreating ourselves.
I prefer to use the word: Recreating rather than Reinventing Training your mind to allow you to take the necessary steps to bring about change is the first step.
Then taking "Baby Steps", and overcoming the impulse to "Stay Put". Finding out what's holding you back Simple things like: Making a phone call.  Going on the internet. Joining an organization. Subscribing to a new publication. Creating a file. Rearranging your closet. Writing a letter. Seeking assistance. Visualizing yourself successful. Prioritizing tasks. Setting up a reward system for yourself. Blast through procrastination. Stop waiting for the perfect moment to make change.
This type of "Mind Set" represents a trap that will keep you from ever moving from point A to point B. Look for an easy win.  Remember take "Baby Steps".  Don't think that you have to change everything all at once.
Reframe your tasks. Approach the job from a different perspective. Allow yourself a Reward for each step. Maintain your momentum, recognize that a brief delay due to circumstances beyond your control is just that:  A Brief Delay.
Now back to getting your "Mind Right".
SELF-HYPNOSIS.
All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. If you visit a Hypnotherapist, he or she will tell you this. It's all about what is inside you. You may need to visit a professional Hypnotherapist to get a jump start, or to break through to the other side of your conscious being and that's good. The word: Recreation is so key to recreating yourself or creating a new person.  Rest your mind and body.  Visualize what you want to be, who you are and how easy it will be to recreate yourself.
Utilize:  Aromatherapy. Smelling good and feeling good.
Take a whirl in a whirlpool bath or a Jacuzzi. Bathe your cares away.
Listen to music: Easy listening music. The type your grandmother and grandfather listened to can have a drastic effect on your being. It's easy to listen to which means:  "Boring"!  Pause But it gives our minds and nervous system a break from all the noise and confusion around us.
Listen to soothing nature sound, Birds, Streams, water, you know what I mean, the kind you can get on CD these days.
Get relaxed with Relaxation Tapes and CDs.
As you relax and take a small vacation from your busy schedule,  you are taking recreation and rejuvenating your mind and body. On a subconscious level you are reinventing. Our minds simultaneously operate at the conscious and subconscious level. Our subconscious mind can interpret and process information at a far greater speed than our conscious mind can. The subconscious mind does not need to weight the data or attempt to put things in order. It is our free spirit and tends to act on stimulus rather than logic. On the other hand, the conscious mind bases all its decisions on logic, weighing the data and allowing us to act on the data received in an appropriate manner, according to social boundaries. Why not allow both our conscious and subconscious mind to work for you in unison to help you make progress and positive change. Finally, another good way to relax your mind and body is Meditation.  I said "Meditation" not "Medication". Although the latter seems easier and faster!   Pause
2 - 4 - 6 - 8- "Lets all meditate".
Meditation helps us slowdown the mind, which in human beings, as you likely already know, tends to be frenzied, dashing about from here to there. What ever technique you engage in to help relax your mind and body in your quest for reinventing, get in the habit of devoting at least a little time to it on a daily basis, or at least every other day.  Remember to take the time to relax both your mind and your body.
In summation, let me say that there are many steps one can take in the process of reinventing one's self.
You can transform your career. Your relationships. Your body and Mind. Your circumstances, what ever they may be. You can have a better life. More money. More Respect. You can become more spiritual. You can be happier. Isn't that what it's all about?
It takes time, patience, work, persistence, and faith in yourself. Above all:  believe in yourself and do not let anyone tell you "you can't Change".
Your dreams can come true.   We have the power within us to make change occur.  You need only to look within and tap that part of your inner self that wants you to be happy. And all things are possible.
